The Seventh-day Adventist Church was formally organised in 1860, with an estimated membership of around 3,500 at the time (Church Heritage Booklet; Schwarz and Greenleaf, 2000). Over the past 165 years, the church has experienced remarkable growth, largely due to aggressive evangelistic campaigns, global mission efforts, and institutional expansion. However, the mission field remains enormous, and more outreach efforts are needed.
As of November 2024, the global population reached 8 billion, with India and China each having 1.4 billion people (UNFPA, 2024). In Zambia, the population stood at 19.6 million in 2022 (Zambia Statistics Agency, 2025). Despite this rapid population growth, only 21 million people worldwide are baptised Seventh-day Adventists, spread across 212 out of 235 UN-recognized territories (GC Archives and Statistics, 2021).
In Zambia, out of the 19.6 million people, only 1.4 million are baptised Adventists (SID, 2023).
However, these figures exclude children and other non-baptised members, who form a significant part of the church membership. When these groups are considered, the estimated Adventist population could be over 37 million globally and more than 2 million nationally, assuming other factors remain constant (ceteris paribus).
Since 1860, the SDA Church has been adding approximately 130,000 new members annually, marking a significant milestone. However, this growth rate lags behind global population growth, highlighting the need for strategic evangelism, member retention efforts, and data-driven mission planning.
A critical point to consider is the accuracy of church statistics. As demonstrated in the Bible, Numbers 1, God values correct and up-to-date human statistics. Therefore, population specialists and demographers must be involved in the collection and analysis of church data. Currently, demographic details in SDA membership records are often lacking, limiting their effectiveness for mission planning and growth projections. By doing so, we can better understand membership trends and improve mission outreach strategies.
